چکیده

We present the second paper of a series whose aim is to perform a global study of Galactic A-supergiants. Very little work has been carried out to determine the stellar parameters of these stars. This is illustrated with a brief review of some previous works. In this paper we analyze the determination of absolute magnitudes, spectral types and atmospheric parameters using the most recent Kurucz LTE blanketed model atmospheres and we discuss the applicability of the calibrations, such as the Schmidt-Kaler’s (1982) calibration. Rotation is also an important parameter in A-supergiants but their rotational velocities are poorly known. We have calculated projected rotational velocities from the Fourier analysis of the observed Mg II (4481 Å) line.

B-type Supergiants in the SMC: Rotational velocities and implications for evolutionary models

High-resolution spectra for 24 SMC and Galactic B-type supergiants have been analysed to estimate the contributions of both macroturbulence and rotation to the broadening of their metal lines. Two different methodologies are considered, viz. goodness-of-fit comparisons between observed and theoretical line profiles and identifying zeros in the Fourier transforms of the observed profiles. The ad...

Understanding B-type supergiants in the low metallicity

Despite a resurgence of effort over the last decade in the area of massive stars there is still ambiguity over their evolutionary path, contamination of their surface abundances and the behaviour of their stellar winds. Here 10 SMC B-type supergiants are analysed applying a unified model atmosphere code FASTWIND to intermediate resolution spectra from the ESO Multi Mode Instrument (EMMI) on the...

Stis Uv Spectroscopy of Early B Supergiants in M31

We analyze STIS spectra in the 1150-1700 Å wavelength range obtained for six early B supergiants in the neighboring galaxy M31. Because of their likely high (nearly solar) abundance, these stars were originally chosen to be directly comparable to their Galactic counterparts, and represent a much-needed addition to our current sample of B-type supergiants, in our efforts to study the dependence ...

Terminal velocities of luminous , early - type SMC stars

Ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) are used to determine terminal velocities for 11 O and B-type giants and supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the Si IV and C IV resonance lines. Using archival data from observations with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph and the InternationalUltraviolet Explorer telescope, terminal velocities are o...

The Open University ’ s repository of research publications and other research outputs Red supergiants around the obscured open cluster

Context. Several clusters of red supergiants have been discovered in a small region of the Milky Way close to the base of the ScutumCrux Arm and the tip of the Long Bar. Population synthesis models indicate that they must be very massive to harbour so many supergiants. Amongst these clusters, Stephenson 2, with a core grouping of 26 red supergiants, is a strong candidate to be the most massive ...
